KHAANACHAHIYE: Fighting Hunger In COVID19
Note:
Phase 5: KhaanaChahiye (continued..) We are currently providing 10,000 meals daily to support the most vulnerable population in the city. Phase 4: #Chhathchahiye is another initiative under KHAANACHAHIYE to provide relief to those who need a roof above their heads in order to survive the next few months of monsoon against heavy rainfall, flooding and landslides. The volunteers will reach out to the absolute needy through their network of ground partners and provide tarpaulins (at the cost of 500 rupees per tarpaulin) to 1,000 people who are in dire need of a shelter. Each tarpaulin measures 12 x 15 feet and will protect one family.
Phase 3: The needy in Mumbai need our support as the covid crisis unfolds in Mumbai. Khaana Chahiye is currently providing 10,000 meals daily to support the most vulnerable population in the city. We need your support to continue our food drives to the absolute needy. We are aiming to raise 10 lakhs which will enable us to add 40,000 meals to our current plan
Phase 2: 1000s of migrant workers are travelling to their hometowns daily from Mumbai to their hometowns, to make sure the families of migrants do not travel hungr, Khaana Chahiye is distributing food to them in railway stations, on highways and in bus stands. To meet the expenses we are increasing the goal amount to Rs. 1 crore.
Phase 1: Due to the extension of the Covid-19 lockdown, Khaana Chahiye team has decided to continue serving meals to the stranded migrant workers and daily wagers till the lockdown ends. To meet the expenses we are increasing the goal amount to Rs. 50 lakh.
Hunger in the Times of Corona
Can you think of the last time when about 55% of the world’s population was quarantined, or, closer home, when the local trains in Mumbai were inoperational for longer than a day, or when Juhu looked like that undiscovered beach from folklore?
COVID-19 has us locked down at home.
But some are far more unfortunate. For about 5 lakh people on the street and many more daily-wage workers out of job at the moment, Mumbai is battling hunger as much as COVID-19.
Who Needs A Meal?
Honestly, anyone who is in dire straits. But specifically, the most vulnerable are the migrant workers, the homeless and underprivileged residents of slums and chawls, waiting endlessly for normalcy to return.
Our Endeavour

We’ve ensured the food to be hygienic and nutritious with a calorie count high enough to be sufficient for a day. Every meal will consist of daal-rice, aloo-sabzi, and rotis.

On 15th July, we completed forty-five lakh cooked meals since we started with 1200 cooked meals for the homeless on the Western Express Highway on 29th March. Without the support of our supporters, we wouldn’t have been able to create an impact, at such a scale to reduce avoidable suffering by helping our fellow citizens in need. The money raised from the efforts for good campaign has helped us share more than 3.5 lakh meals till date.
While the lockdown may have been relaxed in Mumbai, the economy hasn’t found its feet yet. The worst-hit is the informal sector which makes up over 95% of our workforce and those
literally on the margins. Khaana Chahiye is currently providing 10,000 meals daily to support the most vulnerable population in the city and is running short of funds.
We are operational across five arterial routes in the city – Western Express Highway, Eastern Express Highway, SV Road, Link Road, LBS Marg and clusters of slums in the city, which have been driven to destitution, due to the lockdown.
Our current beneficiaries comprise the marginalized population in clusters, across the spectrum which includes:
· Homeless, street dwellers across Mumbai’s arterial roads
· Commercial Sex workers – Kamathipura
· Transgenders – Malvani (Malad), Grant Road
· Domestic house workers – Mankhurd, Burmacell (Kurla), Charkop, Nehru Nagar
· Daily wage construction workers – across Mumbai, Cuffe Parade-Ambedkar Nagar, Worli, Bhiwandi
· Auto-rickshaw drivers – Kurla, Andheri, Bandra
· Zari workers/leatherworkers – Thakkar Bappa Colony and Burmacell – Thakkar Bappa Colony (Kurla)
· Handicapped community – Mankhurd Transit, Govandi
In addition to the above, we have been supporting over 30 institutions like orphanages, old-age homes, relief shelters, support groups, prisons with basic supplies and sanitation products to aid their work.
Based on the current covid situation in Mumbai and the nature of our current operations, we wish to ensure that vulnerable sections of marginalized populations, receive continued support
for the next one month.
We appeal to those who have been supporting this efforts for good campaign to fight hunger in Mumbai to continue to back with us your donations so we can feed more people.
We have collected enough funds for the first round of distribution. Thanks for your support.
